It seems that author J.K. Rowling is having second thoughts about how she ended her bestselling Harry Potter series with the final instalment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

At the book’s end, Rowling’s boy wizard vanquishes Voldemort (D'uh, of course). But in an epilogue that takes place many years later, it is revealed that Harry’s two best friends - Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger - got married and had two children. Harry hooked up with Ron's sister, Ginny.

Many Potter fans had hoped that Harry and Hermione might end up together, and that ending, which took place many years later seemed to put an end to that speculation.

But Rowling now admits she might have been wrong about the ending.

In a soon-to-be-published interview in the U.K.’s Wonderland, Rowling says Ron and Hermione was a “form of wish fulfilment.”

"For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.

"I know, I'm sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I'm absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility.

"Am I breaking people's hearts by saying this? I hope not."

Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the film series adaptation and guest-edited the Wonderland issue, interviewed the writer for the piece.

The quotes were published by The Sunday Times where Watson echoed Rowling’s doubts.

"I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy," the actress said.
