Pop superstar Britney Spears is set to add author to her resume - she's in negotiations to write her first novel.

The X Factor judge is close to reaching a deal with publishers at HarperCollins imprint It Books, but instead of penning her memoirs, the Toxic hitmaker is planning to follow in the footsteps of fellow reality TV star Lauren Conrad and write fiction, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Conrad rose to fame on popular MTV show The Hills, but has since reinvented herself as a fashion designer and novelist. Her first published work, 2009's L.A. Candy, became a New York Times bestseller and featured fictionalised versions of her own life experiences.
