In Hollywood, it used to be if you wanted a career as a movie or TV star, you stayed in the closet.
Late leading men like Rock Hudson, Robert Reed (The Brady Bunch) and Dick Sargent (Bewitched) were such examples.
Times, however, have changed - as evidenced by these actors who, despite being openly gay, have suffered almost no negative backlash professionally.
Prison Break star Wentworth Miller made headlines this week, declining an invite to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival and announcing he's gay. "I am deeply troubled by the current attitude and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government," Miller wrote in his letter declining the offer. Turning his attention from acting to writing recently, Miller penned the script for Stoker starring Nicole Kidman.
Bomer has appeared in Guiding Light and more recently the TV series White Collar. In 2012 the actor came out while receiving a Steve Chase Humanitarian Award, thanking his partner Simon Halls and their three children. "What we have to do is stop the adjective before the job title - whether it's 'black actor,' a 'gay actor' or anything actor," he told E! News in June 2012.
After years of playing the nerdy Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons revealed he's gay in a May 2012 New York Times article and in a decade-long relationship. Parsons is nominated yet again for lead actor in a comedy at next month's Emmys -- an award he's taken home twice before.
NEIL PATRICK HARRIS:
From Doogie Howser to the womanizer Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother, Harris shows no sign of slowing down. In 2006 Harris told People he was "a very content gay man living my life to the fullest...." Harris - who is hosting the Emmys - announced his engagement to David Burtka in 2011.
Everett came out in 1989 and made a name for himself in the '90s with roles in My Best Friend's Wedding and Shakespeare In Love. The actor - who joined Miller in his opposition to Russia's treatment toward gays - has notably appeared in Shrek 2 and Shrek The Third as the voice of Prince Charming.
