Canadian actress Ellen Page has officially come out as a gay woman.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Page, best known for her role in the 2007 romantic comedy Juno, made the announcement at Time to THRIVE, a symposium dedicated to helping LGBT youth in America.

"I’m here today because I am gay, and because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility,” Page told the audience.

Page told the conference since her Hollywood debut, she has felt constant pressure to keep her sexual orientation a secret in a world where every move is scrutinized.

“You have ideas planted in your head, thoughts you never had before, that tell you how you have to act, how you have to dress and who you have to be. I have been trying to push back, to be authentic, to follow my heart, but it can be hard,” Page said.

Page added that she felt it was her duty to stand up and be a proud member of the gay community considering her position as a celebrity. She applauded other brave gay individuals, including University of Missouri football star Michael Sam, and lesbian pop duo Tegan & Sara, thanking them for their individual contributions to the LGBT community.
