Did Coldplay rip off Joe Satriani?
Fri, December 5, 2008

Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani is boiling mad over a song from popular British band Coldplay.

The 52-year-old musician is suing the Grammy-nominated act, accusing them of plagiarizing one of his tracks, Reuters reports.

It's too close a similarity. Whether they meant to or not, credit where credit's due. Coldplay can't legitimately claim to have composed a melody that had already been composed. And the original composer is owed renumeration.

Somebody earlier on here asked who Joe Satriani is! Hard to believe anyone who follows music doesn't know, but maybe you've heard of Mick Jagger? Deep Purple? He's played for them as well as having his own 2-decade-long solo career.

Thievery. Satch is probably embarrassed that those (see 40 Year Old Virgin reference) "guys" ripped off his song.
Beaversen, 2008-12-08 15:03:47

considering Satch's version is better, he should just feel sorry for Coldplay and let them be the average band they are.

I think Mr. Satriani has a case. Not only are they same melody, but they are the same beat and in the same key. Not sure if Coldplay meant to rip it off, but that is a little too close to be a mistake.

Havn't heard either song, but, am willing to bet that Coldplay RIPPED off their track from Joe. Hey, Soprano, have you actually ever heard a Satriani track or album, DON'T think that he needs any help from a bunch of losers like Coldplay.

Go get them Joe.....it's pure rip off. Can't stand Coldplay anyways.

coldplay owes joe some dough! no matter how much they suck.
bill rankin, 2008-12-06 16:02:32

They do sound identical but I doubt if it's a rip-off.

Personally,if I were Joe I wouldn't admit to writing anything for Coldplay!

The Youtube comparison makes it a done deal. Joe has every right to go after a band that uses the melody or structure of his material. The music industry must protect it's artists, intentional plagarism or not.

Besides, Joe rocks much harder than Coldplay.

You go Joe!

There are definitely similarities. But it gets worse. Listen to Peter Gabriel’s “Mercy Street” and you will find that Coldplay ripped off the music from that song note for note for their song “Violet Hill”.
