SARNIA, Ont. -- Keith Urban had the glow of a newlywed as he entertained nearly 20,000 fans last night at Bayfest.
The country superstar teased the crowd, laughed heartily and smiled constantly. And why not?
He had his gorgeous bride with him -- although security went to great lengths to keep her under wraps -- for his first concert since marrying Nicole Kidman on June 25.
Many in Centennial Park got to touch Urban's shirt and his hair as he ran through the sweltering throngs while singing The Love of My Life.
The fans -- we'll call them Urbanites -- even held him up for a while as he continued to sing.
"You guys are crazy," he yelled out.
"I look around and see Canada's love embracing me."
Urban played a string of his hits in his 90-minute set, including his No. 1 songs, But for the Grace of God, You'll Think of Me and Days Gone By, which opened the set.
After his first song, Urban, who hasn't changed his appearance since marrying the fashion-conscious Kidman and showed up in faded jeans, green T-shirt and brown boots, turned to his band and simply said, off-mike, "Oh man."
He clearly was enjoying himself.
The party continued throughout his performance, with cowboy hats bobbing and the Urbanites shouting out the words to his songs.
Early in the concert, Urban said, "I'd like to introduce you to somebody . . . " The crowd yelled in anticipation, hoping for Kidman.
Urban paused and continued, "My guitar player."
Gerry and Maxine Craven of Peterborough, who had waited in line since 1 p.m. to get to the front row, were ready with camera in hand.
"I'm hoping (Kidman) will come out," Maxine said.
Those that did get a glimpse of the Oscar-winning movie star described her as "stunning" and "beautiful."
Bayfest organizer Michele Stokley saw Kidman sitting outside the tour bus before the concert. "She looked like a porcelain doll."
Stokley said Urban and Kidman flew into Sarnia in a private jet, arriving at 1:20 p.m. yesterday.
Stokley said a Sarnia radio station said it would pay $75,000 for a shot of the couple kissing. That sent staff into security mode.
"We locked down. We were securing the perimeter. People were pretending to be volunteers (to get in)," Stokley said.
Strathroy singer Shelly Rastin, who opened for Urban, said she couldn't get into her trailer, which was parked near Urban's.
"She (Kidman) won't let us anywhere near there. She's so big, she needs wall-to-wall security," Rastin said.
A large security guard told the media he'd take away the cameras of any photographers who tried to take her photo.
Many media outlets were on hand hoping to catch a glimpse of Kidman.
Stokley said press requests came from Detroit and New York and the weekly U.S. celebrity tabloid Star magazine even made plans to have the concert covered.
"We want as much detail as possible," said Neil Blincow, an editor at the magazine.
Bayfest continues tonight with five bands making music, including Everclear and Collective Soul.
