There was a Maple Leaf flavour at the Cannes Film Festival awards after all.
Canada got its little moment of glory because the Short Film Palme d'Or has been renamed as the Norman McLaren Prize.
McLaren was a legendary experimental short filmmaker at the National Film Board of Canada and won the Palme d'Or for best short, Blinkity Blank, at the 1955 Cannes festival.
This year, Ukrainian filmmaker Igor Strembitskyy, 31, took the new Norman McLaren Prize for Wayfarers. In a Cannes ceremony yesterday hosted by the NFB, he got 3,000 Euros plus an optional offer from the NFB to take care of the distribution for the winning film.
Another option is to get production and investment help on his next film.
