TORONTO - Fans of punctured eyeballs, severed feet and other gory goodness, take heart: The Jigsaw puzzle has been solved.
Although he was dying from cancer at the end of Saw II, it appears the devious deathtrap-building killer Jigsaw will have some form of life in Saw III, which begins filming next month here in Toronto.
Scoopers at Sneak Peek TV reported this week that Tobin Bell, who played the calculating mastermind in the previous two movies, has signed on for the third instalment in Lions Gate Films' low-budget, high-profit gore franchise.
Also returning is Shawnee Smith as Jigsaw's protege, Amanda. (Even though she helps lure innocents into deathtraps, we'll still remember her as that nice girl from Becker.) Saw II star Donnie Wahlberg, who seems to have made Toronto his second home, is also reportedly back for more gore, though there's no word yet if he's officially signed.
Aside from raking in a combined $250 million US in box office on a budget in the $5-million range, the first two Saw movies have obviously found their place in the cultural consciousness, with Scary Movie 4 lampooning the gorefests in a scene starring Dr. Phil and Shaquille O'Neal.
The director of Scary Movie 4, opening in theatres today, even claims the Saw III filmmakers want to borrow the bathroom set created for the parody scene. File that under "you know you've arrived when..."
