SAG drama could end in a walkout
By MICHAEL RECHTSHAFFEN - Special to Sun Media

So now that negotiators for AFTRA, the union comprised largely of daytime TV actors, have agreed to new contract terms, the Screen Actors Guild will likely follow suit any day now, right?

Right?

Well, actually, the opposite is looking to be true.

At a solidarity rally held Monday at SAG headquarters, president Alan Rosenberg was calling for AFTRA members to vote no on the proposed contract ratification with networks and studios.

There has been escalating in-fighting between the estranged sister unions, which ended their longstanding affiliation back in March, just ahead of those contract talks.

As the guild's own negotiations with producers are closing in on the 30-day mark, there are still many issues that both sides remain far apart on, judging from an internal communique sent over the weekend.

They include DVD residuals and new media, which, said Rosenberg, were not covered by the AFTRA deal.

Neither was a proposed travel allowance increase for the first time in 30 years, which would seem like a reasonable request, since back then gas was selling for around 63 cents a gallon.

With that June 30 SAG contract expiration fast approaching, the specter of a walkout is again rearing its ugly head.

Then again, we all know how actors love a little drama.
