Basketball star Lebron James may be courting new teams for his day job, but Lionsgate has him locked up in theaters.
According to Variety, Lionsgate has picked up worldwide rights to "More than a Game," a documentary about James' high-school career. What makes the deal unusual is that it involves in-kind marketing from Nike, Coca-Cola, State Farm and the NBA, all of which could boost the film's box-office take.
James, meanwhile, is rumored to be negotiating a trade to the New York Knicks. He currently plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Might jumping to a new team coincide with "More than a Game's" planned fall 2009 release?
Lionsgate has one previous documentary hit: Bill Maher's "Religulous" has taken in almost $13 million.
