A well-known comedian and occasional local radio show host made his first court appearance this week to face sex-related charges involving a minor.
Shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday, 61-year-old Wayne Flemming — who is a close friend of actor Jim Carrey — bowed slightly while entering the Ontario Court of Justice at 15 Victoria Ave.
Belleville police charged Flemming with multiple sex offences after a "young female from the city of Belleville" came forward with allegations earlier this year.
Further details about the case were not released by police to protect the identity of the complainant.
Flemming was charged with one count each of sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching. He also faces a single charge of trafficking a controlled substance.
In court Thursday, he sat at the rear of the public gallery until his name was called by lawyer Pieter Kort who spoke with him briefly before asking Justice Sam Cureatz that the matter be put over four weeks until Aug. 27.
During the appearance, Flemming — who was wearing a sports jacket, blue jeans and running shoes — did not address the court and left immediately after his case had been dealt with.
The case is due to reappear in court Aug. 27.
Flemming has been an entertainer and occasional actor for 25 years, largely as a standup comedian and an impersonator of celebrities and politicians.
He moved to the city several years ago from the Bancroft area and works occasionally as host of the 'Lorne Brooker Show' on Quinte Broadcasting's CJBQ 800.
