'Avatar' sequels 'mapped out'

James Cameron is already planning a sequel to his record-breaking sci-fi epic Avatar - he has plotlines for two more films "mapped out."

The 3-D movie has become the most successful film of all time, raking in over $2 billion worldwide, and knocking Cameron's all-reigning Titanic from the top of the biggest earning blockbusters list.

As well as proving a hit with cinema-goers, the movie has wowed critics, and is nominated in the Best Picture and Best Director categories at the upcoming Academy Awards in March.

And Cameron admits he could be "persuaded" to start work on a follow-up to the hit, and has already had meetings with technology whizzes to see how they can push the boundaries of filmmaking even further.

When asked by CNN newsman Larry King if a sequel was in the works, Cameron quipped, "We might be persuaded. We'll have to see how much money the movie makes first.

"I have a general story arc for it. But we have had some technical discussions of how we would do it."

In an interview with Empire magazine, he adds, "It wasn't really mapped out as a trilogy. I mapped out a second and third story, but the second story is more in focus. The third story is fainter. I have a road map, I know where I'm going with it. The key to a sequel is to meet audience expectation and yet be surprising."
