Haim's funeral set for Tuesday
Public memorial in L.A. to be held in two weeksBy BRETT CLARKSON, Toronto Sun
LOS ANGELES — Corey Haim's funeral is set for this Tuesday in Toronto and the service will be closed to the public, according to the late actor's MySpace site. Haim's agent, Mark Heaslip, has also confirmed to the Toronto Sun that a public memorial in L.A. will happen in about two weeks. Heaslip said a date hasn't yet been confirmed for the L.A. service but that details should be made available soon. "Corey's funeral will take place Tuesday, March 16, 2010," reads a post on Haim's official MySpace page. "Please keep the Haim family in your thoughts and prayers during this time," the post reads. "The services will be closed to the public and it has been requested that Corey's family be allowed privacy during this time." The family has also asked that fans who wish to send flowers to the funeral should instead send flowers to their local hospital's cancer ward. "In lieu of sending any flowers for Corey's funeral, Judy suggested a wonderful idea: Please send some flowers, in memory of Corey, to the cancer ward (at) your local hospital," the MySpace post reads. Haim's official web site also announced Saturday that the majority of the funeral costs will be covered by Startifacts, a Minneapolis-based celebrity memorabilia company. TMZ reported that Startifacts will cut a cheque for $20,000 to cover the costs of transporting Haim's body from L.A. to Toronto, plus the headstone and other funeral expenses. The proceeds will come from the company's Haim-related auctions. Haim, 38, died early Wednesday after collapsing in his mother Judy Haim's Los Angeles apartment. He had been living with her and helping to take care of her a she battled cancer and according to longtime friend Corey Feldman, Haim was "in the best frame of mind he's ever been in" in the months leading up to his death. After finding fame as a youngster from his roles in Lucas, The Lost Boys, and License To Drive, Haim struggled to land major roles as an adult and battled substance abuse. Media reports have focused on the former teen idol's apparent struggles with prescription medication, although no official cause of death has yet been given by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office. Four different kinds of pills, including Valium, Vicodin, and Soma, were found in the apartment, according to TMZ. On Friday, California Attorney General Jerry Brown announced that Haim's death has been linked to an "illegal and massive prescription drug ring" after his name was found during an investigation of fraudulent prescription pads in San Diego. The L.A. coroner found that at the time of his death, Haim had an enlarged heart, pulomary congestion, and water on his lungs, though none of these conditions has been officially determined to have been a factor in his death. Haim grew up in Toronto and had moved back to his native city a few years ago after suffering a stroke in LA in 2001. On his official web site, Haim's family had set up the Corey Haim Memorial Fund to help cover the costs of the funeral. Donations could be sent to Judy Haim, P.O.
