HOLLYWOOD -- Keeping in the spirit of out-with-the-old-and-in-with-the-new, we got to wondering about who might turn out to be the next big thing.
Who could have 'em all going gaga or be capable of injecting the masses with a fresh strain of Bieber-type fever?
Barring the emergence of that extremely rare commodity known as the overnight sensation, we've compiled a bunch of names voted most likely to have the "it" factor in 2011.
Topping the list are two individuals who both happen to have co-starred in one of 2010's biggest movies, namely The Social Network, although their performances took a backseat to those flashier turns by Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake.
But don't feel too bad for Rooney Mara and Andrew Garfield, since both are destined for hotness.
You may have also seen Mara before in movies such as Youth in Revolt and that Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, but by the end of the year she'll find herself answering to Lisbeth Salander, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo heroine.
Of course, she'll first have to meet the approval of the rabid fans of the books and the original Swedish films starring Noomi Rapace, but we're confident the 25-year-old Mara's got the goods to go the distance when the American version hits theatres on Dec. 21.
Andrew Garfield, meanwhile, isn't scheduled to be seen on the big screen again until July 2012, but rest assured talk about him will be building over the months leading up to his official arrival as the new Spider-Man.
The word on the set is that Los Angeles-born, UK-raised 27-year-old Garfield's definitely got it going on as Tobey Maguire's baby-faced successor, including a disarming sweetness that should send female fans' Spidey sense all a-tingle.
While Garfield and Mara are unmistakably names to watch, they're not the only ones who could blow up big time over the next dozen months.
There are also a couple of fresh Aussie imports you should definitely be keeping an eye on, beginning with Chris Hemsworth.
The 6-foot-3, 27-year-old Melbourne native, who's already being touted as the next Sam Worthington, will likely see his stock soar as Thor when the Marvel movie kicks off the summer movie season on May 6.
Fellow Melbourne-bred Emily Browning, on the other hand, will be getting a jump on the butt-kicking come March 22.
That's when Sucker Punch, a Matrix-esque fantasy-thriller, arrives with the 22-year-old Browning making quite the heroic impression.
A couple of other young actresses have also been turning heads of late, including 20-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, who handily carries the haunting backwoods drama, Winter's Bone.
And there's 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, who more than holds her own opposite Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon in True Grit.
While Steinfeld is still contemplating her next move, you'll be able to catch Lawrence in the X-Men origins movie, X-Men: First Class, which comes to theatres in June.
Meanwhile, on the musical front, we're making a not-so-fearless prediction that this season's revamped American Idol will actually produce a bona fide musical superstar
Considering everything else desperate Idol producers are doing to curb the eroding ratings, you gotta figure that even if the talent pool doesn't deliver, they'll find some way to plant one.
