For better or liverwurst, The American Pie series returns with another slice of sex, American style. That got us thinking: Where is Jason Biggs going to put it this time? And what are the best teen sex comedies ever?
I leave Biggs to American Reunion audiences. Meanwhile, the genre was launched in 1978 by National Lampoon's Animal House and re-energized in 1982 by the controversial Canadian movie, Porky's. Animal House was an offspring of the satirical magazine and partly inspired by producer Ivan Reitman's fraternity experiences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont. Porky's was made in Canada by an American ex-pat, Bob Clark. He turned his childhood in Alabama and Florida into a raucous, raunchy comedy about raging hormones and teen sexcapades. Its signature moment is Kim Cattrall howling as she reaches orgasm playing horny Lassie Honeywell.
But number one on my list is still reserved for a John Hughes classic. Enjoy, argue, debate:
10 -- American Pie (1999): Sequels be damned, but the original is at least that -- original.
9 -- Revenge of the Nerds (1984) Nerds vs. jocks -- it's the story of survival in any school.
8 -- Road Trip (2000): Todd Phillips's flick is dumbass, yet effective and funny.
7 -- Weird Science (1985): Two teen boys create "the perfect woman" and end up with sensuous Kelly LeBrock.
6 -- 10 Things I Hate About You (1999): Few teen romances were ever inspired by Shakespeare, but this one with Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles is a modern re-telling of The Taming of the Shrew.
5 -- Risky Business (1983): As a teen, Tom Cruise turned his parents' house into a temporary brothel by hiring hottie prostitute Rebecca De Mornay. Cruise became a gay icon by dancing in his tighty-whities -- and teen girls liked him, too. Cruise gets another shout-out for giving up his virginity in Losin' It (1983).
4 -- Superbad (2007): Produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Greg Mottola, this clever if crazy flick was co-written by the Canuck team of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg as a fictionalized account of their experiences at Vancouver's Point Grey Secondary School. It is as naughty as it is fun. Canadian actor Michael Cera co-stars with American Jonah Hill, who really was funnier when bigger.
3 -- National Lampoon's Animal House (1978): Director John Landis helped turn this sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll flick into a mega-hit. It is still pretty wild to watch because of John Belushi's antics. We remain on double secret probation for liking it.
2 -- Porky's (1982): Even if the notion creeps out every mother alive, the peeping Toms in Clark's demented flick are universal. Teenaged boys are this twisted, tortured and confused. They like to party ... but mostly they want to lose their virginity.
1 -- The Breakfast Club (1985): No nudity, no raunch, no nothing you normally associate with teen sex comedies. But Hughes lets his five protagonists chronicle the hormonal angst of an entire generation.
