It sounds almost like the setup to a joke: Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh directed a movie about strippers. Male strippers. Starring G.I. Joe's Channing Tatum.
But Magic Mike is indeed real, and it's getting some favourable reviews. For its story and its performances, not just for the oiled abs and quarter-bouncing buttocks on display in the film's fictional Florida strip club.
Tatum's taut derriere will surely be a draw for the ladies (and some menfolk), but while we certainly respect his cinematic body of work, we really didn't need to see him naked. Ever.
Still, Tatum is in good company. There have been hundreds of regrettable or off-putting nude scenes throughout the decades, and although they tend to predominantly involve scenes with men, the ladies have been well represented, too.
Here are three more actors and, to keep it equitable, actresses who we wish we hadn't seen naked. And before you start penning nasty e-mails about Channing Tatum being lumped in with this lot, we'll admit it -- we're just jealous.
Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall)
Jason Segel is a funny guy, but the scene where he gives his girlfriend (Kristen Bell) a full-frontal surprise made us want to cover our eyes. Problem was, the slapping sound as he shakes his manhood back and forth made us want to cover our ears. This one requires an extra set of hands.
Ken Jeong (The Hangover, The Hangover Part II)
The hilarious Ken Jeong must be very secure, because his nude scene in The Hangover revealed he's hung like an ant. His micro-willy got even more screen time in The Hangover Part II.
Ken Davitian (Borat)
Don't know the name Ken Davitian? He played Sacha Baron Cohen's rotund, sweaty sidekick in Borat. Remember the scene where the two of them fight naked in the hotel room? Remember the craggy, moon-like surface of Davitian's butt? That's something you can't unsee.
Kathy Bates (About Schmidt, At Play in the Fields of the Lord)
Generously proportioned women are sexy, but as talented as Kathy Bates is, her infamous hot tub scene with Jack Nicholson in About Schmidt and her mud-encrusted naked freak-out in At Play in the Fields of the Lord both scared us and scarred us.
Billie Gibson (The Shining)
You've likely never heard the name Billie Gibson, as The Shining was her only movie credit. But you know the scene: the bathtub in Room 237. Ms. Gibson played the, um, older version of the apparition. Possibly the creepiest on-screen nudity of all time.
Jennifer Connelly (Requiem For a Dream)
Jennifer Connelly is beautiful, no question. And she's done several memorable nude scenes (see 1990's The Hot Spot for proof.) But Requiem For a Dream did the impossible: it made us want to turn off the TV instead of watch Jennifer Connelly have sex.
