The awkward moments never ended for 'Knocked Up' star's Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen as they spent time in the OB/GYN office after a one night stand. This was just the beginning. (FILE)
Oliver Stone's Savages looks at the violent underbelly of the marijuana trade, as seen through the eyes of two Los Angeles pot growers (Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson) and the free-spirited girlfriend they share (Gossip Girl's Blake Lively.) But it also reveals a lot of its stars, including an early sex scene with Kitsch and Lively that both have said was awkward to film.
Thanks to the magic of moviemaking, we suspect that the final on-screen product will be steamy and sweaty and anything but awkward. But that's not always the case. Whether by a director's deliberate design or through a horrible mismatching of chemistry, some Hollywood sex scenes have been very painful to watch. The lovely Lively should be glad she didn't end up in any of these ones.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) - When Stacy (Jennifer Jason Leigh) seduces ticket scalper Mike (Robert Romanus) in the poolhouse, it's disappointingly quick and incredibly uncomfortable afterwards.
Welcome to womanhood, Stacy!
Watchmen (2009) - We're still not sure if the superhero sex scene between Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) and Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman) was being played for laughs. With the flamethrower "orgasm" set to Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, it had to be, right?
Team America: World Police (2004) - OK, this one we know was done for yuks. And it worked, because watching the pornographic coupling of two marionettes under the direction of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone was awful and amazing.
The Brown Bunny (2003) - If this film's infamous and supposedly unsimulated oral sex scene between Chloe Sevigny and writer/director/star Vincent Gallo was meant to shock, it worked. We're still trying to scrub the image out of our heads.
Knocked Up (2007) - Ben (Seth Rogen) just wants to have sex with his pregnant girlfriend (Katherine Heigl), but he can't get over the mental image of, um, disturbing their unborn child with his manhood. His compromise position ultimately gets shot down, too. Arf.
Requiem for a Dream (2000) - This is the second time in as many weeks we've written about the infamous... how to phrase this delicately... rear-to-rear scene in this film, starring Jennifer Connelly. But it bears repeating. So very difficult to watch.
Tiny Furniture (2010) - If we were talking TV shows here, HBO's Girls would occupy half the spots. But since we're not, we'll include Girls creator Lena Dunham's indie flick Tiny Furniture and its realistically awkward depiction of young coupling.
Monster's Ball (2001) - The sex scene between a grieving Leticia (Halle Berry) and prison guard Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) is awkward only because it's so raw and real that we feel like voyeurs intruding on a genuine moment.
Showgirls (1995) - In the least sexy movie about sexy women ever made, Nomi (Elizabeth Berkley) and Zack (Kyle MacLachlan) have wince-inducing, seizure-mimicking poolside sex. You don't know whether to laugh or cry.
