"Star Wars" has topped our month-long poll in which we asked Canoe readers to choose the best movie franchise of all time.
It was a see-saw battle, but in the end George Lucas’ six-film sci-fi saga narrowly beat "James Bond" with 52% of the vote in our Greatest Movie Franchise survey.
“Batman” and “Star Trek” were tied for third.
In its march to the finals, "Star Wars" beat "Terminator," "Harry Potter" and the venerable sci-fi franchise, "Star Trek."
There were a lot of other upsets as well: Captain Jack Sparrow, Edward and Bella, Ethan Hunt, Neo, Shrek, and many more were eliminated in the first round, while Friday the 13th’s Jason made it all the way to the quarter finals.
Many of you also objected to the exclusion of the Bourne series, the Alien franchise, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Paranormal Activity and others (hey, we had to cut it off somewhere).
But we’re confident that no matter what series we threw at Luke, the Force would have been with "Star Wars."
Here are some of you comments from the final match.
Final: Star Wars vs. James Bond
“The first time I watched Star Wars I was 8 years old, and I did not blink for the entire 2 hour movie...no other movie has ever had the same impact on me like Star Wars did...”
“I have to give it to Bond, James Bond. While not all of the 007 movies have been great, a lot of them have been good or great. And quite frankly, with 22 films under their belt (#23 – Skyfall - is due out in time for Christmas), it's pretty forgivable that a few have been duds.
“On the other hand, the Star Wars franchise only really had 2 good or great films... and the rest have been somewhat underwhelming.”
“I am a certified Star Wars geek, and proud of it!!!”
“Every single Bond movie can be re-watched and re-enjoyed without fast forwarding through large sections. Can that be said about all six Star Wars movies, especially the (ugh!) prequels?”
“Star Wars does what a movie of that genre should do, sets my imagination free and brings me right into that galaxy far, far away....”
“Star Wars is the trilogy by which all others are measured. It doesn't matter what you think of the new movies, the gold standard was established. Sorry 007, times’ up.”
“The Star Wars franchise delivers the classic tale of good vs evil and a futuristic sci-fi that takes place in the past. Better characters, better story, better soundtrack and much more entertaining than Bond.”
“You can't seriously compare the Jedi to James Bond? Star Wars is so imaginative and James Bond is just not. You're trying to compare the Beatles to N'Sync and one just outshines the other.”
“Star Wars was groundbreaking cinema, and probably helped to establish the summer blockbuster (aside from Jaws). I've seen enough Bond movies to know there will be a good guy and a bad guy. In Star Wars, you end up loving to hate Darth Vader, by the time we get to Jedi (and the prequels that came years later), we actually end up feeling for Vader. That alone makes it more memorable for me.”
“Tough choice but the fact is Star Wars simply offers a broader appeal, a wider range of themes and motifs to a wider audience. 007 is as suave as he is deadly, but the Force isn't with him.”
“Star Wars influenced a generation of movie goers when it was released, you were transported to another time and place and you were on the journey with all of the characters, and when the movie ended, walking out of the theatre the only question in your mind was: When will the next episode come out? Bond was something you watched waiting for the next Star Wars.”
