'Ghostbusters 3' is set to be a reboot rather than a sequel.
Ivan Reitman - who directed the first two fantasy movies in 1984 and 1989 - confirmed work is being done on the forthcoming film, but he would prefer it to be remade instead of being a continuation from the other two movies.
He said: "I'd like to go forward and make new things. I think Ghostbusters probably should be remade, if we can get it all right. We're working on it, so we'll see."
Ivan is also working on 'Triplets', a sequel to his 1988 comedy project 'Twins' - which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito in the titular roles - but he is "quite nervous" about how the forthcoming movie might turn out.
He explained: "With 'Triplets', I'm quite nervous about it. I think it's somebody's commercial idea, and usually that's a scary thought. There's no writer, and there's no idea yet. I think that was more of a press release than anything else."
Ivan is keen to direct sequels and reboots of his previous films because he admits there isn't a lot of money around to create original motion pictures.
He added to Collider.com: "A third of the films that are being made are animated films for children or a mostly family audience, a third of the movies are comic book movies - not that there's anything wrong with them - and that leaves 200 other movies, sharing this very narrow financial amount.
"That's made them very nervous about doing anything original, and doing anything that isn't down-the-centre and seems to be commercial."
