KYLIE

Taylor had her share of bad reviews
By Michael Rechtshaffen, Special to QMI Agency

Lindsay Lohan, left, in Lifetime's Liz & Dick, and Liz Taylor, right, in a scene from 1951's "A Place in the Sun."

HOLLYWOOD -- Thursday is Thanksgiving in the U.S. -- a day of taking stock (and, advisably, Pepto-Bismol) for Americans as they gather around the dinner table with friends and loved ones.

Everybody's got something to be thankful for, even Lindsay Lohan.

Yes, it's true that her big comeback movie, Lifetime's Liz & Dick, has been getting some pretty harsh reviews ahead of its Nov. 25 airing, and the notices for Lohan's Elizabeth Taylor performance haven't been any kinder.

But at least this Thanksgiving she's not in jail, or even under house arrest.

And, more to the point, while words like "Lohan is woeful as Taylor" (The Hollywood Reporter) and "Lindsay Lohan not a total disaster" (Newsday) can certainly sting, LiLo can take comfort in knowing that she's actually getting off easy, compared to the reviews Taylor got in her time.

Yes, ET received several Oscars -- including those for her performances in Butterfield 8 and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? -- but over the course of her 60-year screen career she also logged her share of absolute stinkers and received the caustic reviews to match.

Such as?

The Sandpiper (1965)

"The Burtons were paid $1,750,000 for their performances. Were I you, I wouldn't settle for less for watching them."

--Judith Crist (TV Guide)

The Comedians (1967)

"Elizabeth Taylor was a disaster"

--author Graham Greene

Ash Wednesday (1973)

"Ash Wednesday is so bad that even Liz Taylor's performance becomes almost inconspicuous in it."

--John Simon

A Place in the Sun (1951)

"I got so sick of starry-eyed close-ups of Elizabeth Taylor that I could have gagged."

--Raymond Chandler

Hammersmith is Out (1972)

"Wobbling her enormous derriere across the screen in a manner so offensive it would bring litigation from any dignified, self-respecting performer ... inspires pity instead of laughs. She has been announcing plans to retire from the screen. Now is as good a time as any."

--Rex Reed

Ouch! So Happy Thanksgiving, Lindsay -- just something to chew on along with your humble (pumpkin) pie!
