Are 3D movies here to stay?
By Jim Slotek, QMI Agency

Scenes from Avatar and Prometheus (Handouts)

There aren't many directors who'll say what they think about 3D. But Genndy Tartakovsky admits he didn't want people watching his animated kid flick Hotel Transylvania through cheap glasses.

That decision was thrust upon him because, well, all children's movies are in 3D now, and in Hollywood, one doesn't break ranks.

"Realistically I'm not a big fan of 3D, but the studio demands what it should be," says Tartakovsky, whose low-tech approach was the charm behind shows like Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory. Even his Star Wars Clone Wars TV series was mostly drawn 2D.

"I sense the trend in America right now is heading away from 3D. It's gimmicky, and unless you're going big and in your face, there's no point to it.

"We watched the premiere in 3D, but otherwise, I only just watch 2D movies. The whole idea of going to the movies is to escape, and when you're wearing 3D glasses it's always a reminder that you're watching a movie."

Is it just wishful think
