It's the beginning of the end of the world.

On Dec. 21, according to some believers, a monumental event will change the Earth as we know it. Some think it will involve a positive spiritual transformation. Many believe it'll be some sort of cosmic cataclysm that will devastate life on our planet. And most of these theories hinge on the Mayan long count calendar finishing its 5,125-year cycle, which is when humanity's parking meter apparently expires.

Sure, lots of academics - or, you know, just sane people - have pointed out the utter unlikelihood of anything going down on the 21st. The Mayan prophecies have been misinterpreted, or are just plain bunk. The galactic alignment is a bunch of hooey. We have nothing to worry about.
