Oscar is playing it safe. Abraham Lincoln will be re-elected, 148 years after he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Steven Spielberg's sombre biopic about the 16th President of the United States is the clear front-runner in the 85th Oscar race -- just as it had been a slam-dunk to lead in the nominations.
Those 12 noms that Lincoln generated on Thursday did put it out front, usually a plus in the best picture race. But not always: Hugo led last year with 11 noms and won five Academy Awards. But none was in a major category and The Artist took best picture.
The 12 noms for Lincoln is one more than Ang Lee's Life of Pi earned this year. But Pi has no mathematical chance. It is a beautiful, ethereal motion picture. That is not the kind of contender that wins it all.
