As always, there is Canadian content in the Oscar races. It may be modest but there is enough action to warrant flying the flag on Oscar night, Feb. 24.
The highest profile nominee is Kim Nguyen's film War Witch (a.k.a. Rebelle). It is competing in the best foreign language category, up against Michael Haneke's internationally acclaimed Amour. With Haneke's masterpiece in the running, no one else stands a chance. But Nguyen's fine effort gets more recognition.
War Witch, which screened at the Toronto filmfest under its original title of Rebelle, plays in French and the African language Lingala. Set in the sub-Saharan, War Witch tells the compelling story of a young woman who tells the story of her kidnapping -- and her reluctant participation in a bloody civil war -- to her unborn child.
