When casting the leads of a major motion picture, especially one that's based on the first in a series of bestselling books, filmmakers are always looking for that one elusive, star-making quality.
In the case of Beautiful Creatures, a Southern Gothic supernatural romance culled from the 563-page novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, writer-director Richard LaGravenese had cast a wide net spanning several continents to find the perfect Ethan Wate and Lena Duchannes.
But, along with that crucial element of chemistry, the deciding factor for selecting relative newcomers Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert came down to an unusual clincher.
"I was attracted to them because neither one of them wanted to do it," laughs LaGravense, whose previous credits include Living Out Loud and the script for The Fisher King.
