Daniel Day-Lewis does not work often but, when he does, he works well. Even superbly. Now he is the favourite to win the best actor Oscar for playing the title role in Steven Spielberg's biopic Lincoln.

While there are pockets of resentment -- some observers cringe seeing a British actor of Irish heritage playing the Kentucky-born 16th president of the United States -- Day-Lewis lives the role. As a result, Lincoln is an historical drama that feels real, poignant and relevant.

So there is method in Day-Lewis' presumed madness. Taking time off rejuvenates him. Since starring in The Boxer (1997), Day-Lewis has accepted just five roles. Acting is obviously his artistic calling, but it is not his commercial career.

BEST ACTOR FACTS:

Jack Nicholson holds the record for the most noms -- 12 -- by a male actor. He remains tied with Walter Brennan with most male wins with three. Nicholson won twice as best actor, once in support. Brennan won only in support.
