It's amazing how many controversial incidents are associated with a simple, self-congratulatory awards show like the Oscars.
And how many people have an axe to grind.
There have been important social and political kerfuffles at the ceremony over the years, such as the furor over an honorary Oscar for French director Jean-Luc Godard, given his perceived anti-semitism, or the protests over an honorary Oscar for Elia Kazan because he squealed on 'communists' in Hollywood and got his colleagues blacklisted in the early '50s.
And then there's the stupid stuff, like the awarding of an Oscar for best picture to Forrest Gump in the same year Pulp Fiction (1994) was nominated.
