When picking candidates as best director of 2012, finicky Oscar obviously admired men who multi-task. So all five nominees are, indeed, male. All are double-nominated -- once for direction, once for either writing or producing.
Three of the five contenders were double-nominated for screenplays: Michael Haneke for Amour; Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild; and David O. Russell for Silver Linings Playbook.
The other two are Hollywood heavyweights who co-produced best picture nominees: Ang Lee for Life of Pi; and Steven Spielberg for Lincoln (since 1951, producers collect the Academy Award for best picture).
