Here are Steve Tilley's top moments of Oscar night:

1. Capt. Kirk beams in

Canada’s own William Shatner donned his Star Trek uniform – with the waistline taken wayyyy out – and travelled back in time for host Seth MacFarlane’s opening bit, advising the Family Guy creator how to avoid the bad headlines he was getting in the future. Methinks Kirk had been into the Romulan Ale, but the whole thing was insane, occasionally idiotic and nothing if not memorable.

2. Antisocial media

Take every snarky comment you might have made while watching the Oscars and magnify that by several hundred thousand, and you’ve got the unblinking, unforgiving eye Twitter cast over the 85th annual Academy Awards. Every flub, every snub, every slurred acceptance speech was being analyzed and shredded in real time. Remember when watching TV just meant watching TV? So dull!
