Did you know that if you stick your fingers in your ears and make sort of a spinning motion with them while humming to yourself, it makes it nearly impossible to hear — or at least make sense of — any sort of outside sound?
I know this, because it’s what I did any time I was in a movie theatre that showed a trailer for Star Trek, J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the adventures of Captain Kirk and company. I would close my eyes, bow my head, jam my fingers in my ears and do the spin-and-hum to drown out what was happening on the screen. Much to the embarrassment of my friends.
