Image is everything in Hollywood. It is not just about having a co-starring role in the G.I. Joe movies. My fiancee thinks actor Channing Tatum is a meathead, a big dumb cluck with no sex appeal.

Of course, there are women who disagree, women who like his superb fitness level and chunky machismo. But the most interesting thing about Tatum, now that he has hit his 30s, is that he is throwing us a few curveballs onscreen.

Famed director Steven Soderbergh has become a mentor. He was the one who encouraged Tatum to write and star in Magic Mike, the movie based on Tatum's own experience as a young dancer, model and stripper before he became a movie star. The quality of the piece surprised outsiders (although his own mom, Kay Tatum, told me she was squeamish about seeing it for personal reasons).

With the recent Side Effects on Tatum's credit list, that now makes three Soderbergh films with Tatum in a starring role.

At 32, the Alabama-born actor is beginning to show a lot more than just Step Up dance moves or macho sexuality.
