Star Wars versus Raiders of the Lost Ark. Could it have ended any other way?
After starting with 32 beloved movie favourites, you’ve selected the final two films that will compete for top honours in our Best Summer Movie Ever survey.
In our semis, Marty McFly and Doc Brown didn’t have enough plutonium in their flux capacitor to vanquish the Force. But in a surprise turn of events, Return of the Jedi was handily defeated by Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (Your comments for all of our semi-final matchups are below).
Bit of a surprise there.
To get to the final, Star Wars beat Jaws in the opening round, then it thoroughly destroyed Star Trek and Lethal Weapon II, before handily sending Marty McFly and Doc Brown Back to the Future. Similarly, Indy whipped The Avengers, then Terminator (No, he won’t be back), Forrest Gump and – surprise, surprise – Return of the Jedi.
Plenty of other notables were dispatched along the way including The Dark Knight, Iron Man, The Sixth Sense, The Hangover, Jurassic Park, The Goonies, Inception, Ghost, Dirty Dancing and more.
So now we’re down to the first instalment of two iconic franchises. One was the first (well, technically fourth) in a generations-spanning space western. The other, made a hero of a swashbuckling archeologist and solidified both Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg as creative powerhouses.
We’ll be back next week to let you know who the winner was. In the meantime, you can watch YouTube clips for both Raiders and Star Wars and read your comments from last week’s matchups.
Your recaps of the Round Four matchups:
Back to the Future (24%) vs. Star Wars (76%)
“Star Wars is constantly expanding Back to the Future was a closed story arc.”
“Lightsabers, The Force, Good vs Evil, Darth Vader > Biff Howard Tannen.”
“Having a lightsaber is ten times better than having a flux capacitor! Star Wars all the way!!
“Star Wars was an epic masterpiece that redefined how movies were made for the next 30 years. Sorry Doc.”
“Not even close. Star Wars had people lining up 5, 6, 7 times to see the movie (granted pricing was much cheaper back then). Marty McFly is great, but no match for Darth Vader and friends.”
“An extremely difficult choice... I had to close my eyes and imagine I'm lying on the couch on a Sunday, and both are on TV. Star Wars takes it.”
Raiders of the Lost Ark (58%) vs. Return of the Jedi (42%)
Honestly, after I saw how the matches were playing out, I was expecting a Star Wars vs. Star Wars final. The moral of that line of thinking: Don’t underestimate the power of Indy.
“Indy is just too quick for the Force.”
“Raiders never let up, it was a nonstop rollercoaster ride from start to finish. Harrison Ford created an iconic character as well. One word explains why I wasn't too happy with Jedi: Ewoks.”
“My love affair with archaeology began after watching Raiders. My love affair with the Dark Side began after watching Return of the Jedi...but to pick only one...Raiders for the win. Indiana Jones - the Hat - the Whip - he is the symbol of adventure.”
“Indy is smarter than the Empire.”
“To avoid the all Star-Wars finale, I vote Raiders. Both are great films, but unfortunately the Ewoks started the franchise down the path to Jar Jar Binks and worse to come I fear ...”
