Let’s face it, villains make the story. No matter how much we want to see the hero save the day, it’s the baddie who entertains us the most. And with Spider-Man facing off against three, count ‘em, three evildoers this weekend in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it got us thinking about just who our favourite webslinger’s ultimate nemesis is? Spidey has some of comicdom’s most iconic nefarious fiends. Now we’re going to let you choose the top bad guy. Here are the top eight – who’s the baddest of them all?

Green Goblin vs. The Vulture

Two of Spider-Man’s most elderly adversaries meet in round one. Norman Osborn and his son Harry have been plaguing Spidey since 1964. The Green Goblin is one of the webslinger’s oldest rivals and is responsible for the death of one of Spider-Man’s greatest loves. He’s a pure psychopath who rides around on the Goblin Glider throwing explosive jack-o’-lanterns. The Vulture has also been around since the 1960s and he can fly too. In one iteration, he spits acid from his mouth. But something tells us he’d be better fighting The Falcon.

Venom vs. The Rhino

Venom looks like Spider-Man, but looks can be deceiving. The ‘80s character is a parasitic villain that takes over its host subject. Spidey was the first victim of the gooey baddie. He’s already appeared onscreen once in Sam Raimi’s trilogy and will get his own spinoff film. The Rhino, on the other hand, is from Marvel's Silver Age and boasts a ton of strength. He’s making his big screen debut in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Honestly, Venom’s tongue just grosses us out.

Sandman vs. Kingpin

A shapeshifter with the ability to turn himself into sand versus a crime boss with tentacles throughout New York City – it’s a classic matchup. Sandman was featured in Spider-Man 3, while Kingpin battled Daredevil in Ben Affleck’s misguided 2003 film. How do you defeat a guy who can disintegrate at will?

Electro vs. Doctor Octopus

Call this the battle of the geeks. After first appearing in the comics in 1964, Electro is making his big screen debut in TASM2. And Jamie Foxx’s cool blue look definitely makes this villain better looking with age. Doc Ock has been around even earlier, making his big splash in 1963. We think his tentacled appendages give him a slight edge over the master of electricity. He was played onscreen by Alfred Molina in 2004’s Spider-Man 2.

Check back for round 2 this Thursday.
