Now that the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII has been revealed, it’s time to start speculating about another hotly anticipated ensemble movie: Justice League.

Warner Bros. recently confirmed that a Justice League film will follow 2016’s Batman vs. Superman (or whatever the Man of Steel sequel ends up being called), with Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) joined by other members of the star-spangled superhero squad.

With a rumoured 2017 release date – the movie will reportedly be shot back-to-back with Batman vs. Superman, and directed by Zack Snyder – is it too early to start thinking about who might be great for the roles of the rest of Justice League’s metahumans? Nah!

Aquaman

It sounds like a belated April Fool’s Day joke, but Matt Damon’s name has been mentioned as a contender for the role of the unappreciated king of the ocean. Game of Thrones’ Khal Drogo, aka Jason Momoa, has also been bandied about – maybe he can ride dolphins as well as he rides horses.

Our pick: Matthew McConaughey. No, seriously. Aquaman is easily the least cool member of the Justice League, so it would be perfect to counteract that by casting a frosty-cool cucumber like McConaughey. Give him a flowing beard, an abs-revealing costume and a golden trident, and he could make Aquaman a force to be reckoned with.

Green Lantern

Canada’s own Ryan Reynolds played the pilot-turned-superhero in 2011’s Green Lantern, but the movie was a critical and commercial dud. As much as we like Reynolds (and hope he still makes that Deadpool movie), if Warner intends to reboot the emerald space-cop for potential solo spinoffs, they need to recast the role.

Our pick: Armie Hammer. Don’t blame him for The Lone Ranger... the dude is very talented and has the right mix of dramatic chops and playfulness to embody Earth’s member of the Green Lantern Corps. He was originally supposed to play Batman in George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal.

Green Arrow

After seeing what a small role Hawkeye had in The Avengers, we hope his DC Comics counterpart fares better as Justice League’s archery enthusiast. The critical success of the TV series Arrow shows there could be a lot of fan interest in seeing Oliver Queen on the big screen.

Our pick: Canada’s own Stephen Amell. It’s unlikely Warner would opt for such a direct connection between Justice League and Arrow, in which Amell stars – unlike The Avengers and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the two don’t explicitly share the same cinematic universe – but he’s shown that he’s a great fit for the part.

The Flash

Also soon to be getting his own series on The CW, the scarlet speedster will surely be part of director Snyder’s Justice League, though whether as Barry Allen, Wally West or another incarnation of the classic superhero is still up in the air.

Our pick: Anton Yelchin. As Chekov on the Star Trek reboots and Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation, Yelchin is no stranger to big-budget special effects movies. But the two-dimensional characters he played in those flicks don’t do him justice. No pun intended.

Hawkman

Although he wears one of the goofiest costumes in the pantheon of DC superheroes (and that is definitely saying something), it would be awfully cool to see what a big-budget film could do with Hawkman. But that would probably also mean casting Hawkgirl, which might be too many feathered super-friends.

Our pick: True Blood star Joe Manganiello has been previously linked to rumours of a yet-to-materialize Hawkman movie, and frankly it sounds like a good fit. Although if Hawkman were to be left out of Justice League entirely, we wouldn’t complain.

Martian Manhunter

He’s big. He’s green. He’s, well, Martian. And he’s one of the most powerful heroes in the Justice League, next to Superman himself. It remains to be seen if the J’onn J’onzz will be in the movie, but many fans are clamouring for his inclusion.

Our pick: Dwayne Johnson. We know he’s going to playing someone in the DC universe, and while Lobo (or even Green Lantern) are the most common theories, he’s got the height, physique and the smooth scalp for this part.

Supergirl

There are subtle hints in Man of Steel that Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El has already arrived on Earth, meaning Supergirl could show up as early as Batman vs. Superman. She’d be a welcome addition to this Justice League sausage party, and would ensure Wonder Woman had someone to go to the bathroom with.

Our pick: Nicola Peltz. Bound for household namedom as Mark Wahlberg’s daughter in this year’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, she’s also proven her dramatic chops on A&E’s Bates Motel. And she certainly looks the part.
