Rooney Mara has used her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival in France to propose a campaign to persuade movie bosses to make a sequel to her film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

The actress took over the role of Lisbeth Salander, made famous by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish film series, in a U.S. adaptation of the first installment of Stieg Larsson's book trilogy.

Fans have been waiting three years for a sequel based on the second novel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and Mara admits she doesn't know if the project will ever materialise, so she has urged fans to start a petition.

Speaking during her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, she tells E! News, "I would love to do it. Maybe start a petition, because I want to do it."
