Drew romance
'Fever Pitch' star talks love, life and turning 30
By -- Calgary Sun

HOLLYWOOD -- On screen, Drew Barrymore has had her share of dating nightmares.

In Fifty First Dates she played a girl with amnesia who had to fall in love with Adam Sandler all over again every day.

In her Cinderella movie Ever After she discovered she'd fallen in love with a prince and in Fever Pitch, which opened Friday, she falls for Jimmy Fallon only to discover his passion for her is matched by his passion for baseball.

"In real life I haven't had a lot of bad first dates. My life is more like: 'Hi, nice to meet you. Let's be together for three years.'

"I don't date. I fall in love," insists Barrymore, who was married briefly to Tom Green and Jeremy Thomas and was engaged to Jamie Walters.

She is currently dating rock musician Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes.

"I love Fabrizio and he knows I love him. That's all people need to know about our relationship.

"All the pictures of me kissing him in public are at airports.

"We say goodbye at airports like millions of other people. They just don't get their photos in newspapers and magazines."

Barrymore says she is grateful to have someone like Moretti in her life because he understands her lifestyle.

"I'm a workaholic and that's tough on relationships. I'm not organized in my schedule, which makes it all the more random. People end up working around my schedule."

Barrymore says she refuses to apologize and is not about to make drastic changes because "work is a high priority with me. Putting up with that is a compromise someone has to make to be with me."

Turning 30 in February had Barrymore reflecting on her life and not just because she was featured on the cover of Vogue.

"I'm not a model so it was a thrill to be featured on Vogue to celebrate turning 30. I'm grateful people realized it was a special time in my life."

For Barrymore turning 30 means "taking all the things from my 20s that worked, keeping them and discarding those that didn't."

It also means setting goals that will challenge her.

"I want to travel more to expand my horizons. I want to go to Africa and India."

Having acted since she was three, Barrymore has made more than 50 films for screen and TV. Now she says she wants "to direct a film and I want to work at a travel magazine. I want to do it all. I don't want simply to repeat but to change."

She acknowledges she should be thinking about having children but explains "it will be a few years before that happens. "I want to fit marriage and children into my hectic lifestyle. I've tried marriage before but not to have children. As much as I have experimented with many things in life, starting a family wasn't something I wanted to experiment with.

"I want to be ready for children. I want to be the smartest, most selfless version of myself before having a baby. I need a few more life experiences before that happens."

Fever Pitch teams Barrymore with Fallon who, like Sandler, got his start on Saturday Night Live. "I begged Adam to do The Wedding Singer and I begged Jimmy to do Fever Pitch. These two guys are really decent, amazing, kind people. You know before you begin the movie that the working experience will be good.

"I find if I really admire a person, the chemistry is better. Adam and Jimmy are men I adore and admire."

Barrymore admits she would "find it very difficult to fake romance with someone I didn't like. Thank heaven I haven't been called upon to do that yet but I know it would be so very difficult."

For his part, Fallon says it was easy falling in love with Barrymore for the camera.

"Drew has such a dreamy face. She directs you with her emotions. I was nervous about doing a romantic comedy until the first time we got in front of the cameras. It all just seemed so simple because Drew was so relaxed and confident. She helped me feel the same.

"We're basically the same age but, when it comes to movies, she's such a veteran and I'm such a novice. I learned by watching her."

Barrymore has joined Rene Zellweger, Mena Suvari and Brittany Murphy in Hollywood's latest trend of blonds dyeing their hair. "I didn't do it to disguise myself. I did it because I like change. I love that my profession asks me to be a chameleon and this is just one of many ways I draw up to the plate."

Barrymore says one of her idols is Jane Fonda.

"I have a collage of Jane Fonda on my wall with all her different looks from her different films. I think it's exciting when someone doesn't stay the same."

Still Barrymore admits she damages "the living hell out of (my) hair going brown. That's the downside of change. It costs you."

It's been two years since Barrymore and her pals Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu released Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, the sequel to their hit 2000 movie Charlie's Angels. "There are no definite plans for a second sequel but I know we'd all sign on the moment someone announces one. Cameron, Lucy and I hang out all the time so we might as well be filming another Charlie's Angels."
