Berkley sheds stigma
By LOUIS B. HOBSON
BEVERLY HILLS -- Elizabeth Berkley is back from the brink.

Last year at this time, the 24-year-old former star of TV's Saved By the Bell was being crucified for her performance as the Las Vegas stripper in Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls.

"Ever since those reviews for Showgirls, it's like I was that woman in The Scarlet Letter. Except that instead of having to wear the letter A for adulteress, I was condemned to wear an S for Showgirls," recalls Berkley.

Her agent's phone stopped ringing until she finally got a call to play a small role in The First Wives Club.

Berkley plays the upstart actress who steals the producer-husband of a Hollywood diva, played by Goldie Hawn.

"Goldie, Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Maggie Smith were so supportive. They were so encouraging. It gave me back my confidence."

Berkley says she hasn't been able to make any other films between Showgirls and Wives Club because she is taking a degree in English literature at a Los Angeles college.

Berkley says she still lives at home with her parents and is not currently dating anyone. Her studies come first.
