Sophia Bush: Not just a pretty face
By Bill Harris, QMI Agency

Being the beautiful girl is basically bush-league, according to Sophia Bush.

It's easy to have that attitude when you look like Sophia Bush, right?

But Bush, who is one of the stars of the new sitcom Partners (CBS, Citytv), was endeavouring to make a wider point about beauty and the showbiz beast.

The subject was broached when I mentioned to her that she seems to have bypassed the occasional reluctance of attractive actresses to do physical comedy because it might make them look less attractive.

"I totally get it, but I also know that the notion of being attractive, or like, quote-unquote, the hot girl, to me is so lame," Bush said.

"I am incredibly fortunate to have had a beautiful education. I went to incredible private schools and a private university, I was an honours student. My brain is by far the thing I value about myself the most.

"And sure, it's flattering if someone looks at you and goes, 'Hey, you look really hot in that dress.' Well, thanks, but in 30 years my t--- and my ass aren't going to be where they are now, so..." The small group of reporters gathered around Bush laughed.

"I get off on what just happened, you guys laughing," Bush said. "If you think I look pretty today, that's nice, but it doesn't affect my life."

Bush, 30, is known to television audiences for her nine seasons playing Brooke Davis on One Tree Hill. She also has been a staple on "hot 100" lists in multiple magazines, by the way.

Partners, which is based on the lives of creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, is about two life-long best friends, one gay and one straight (played by Michael Urie and David Krumholtz), whose bromance is tested when one of them gets engaged. Bush plays Ali, the fiancee of the straight one.

"I clearly am a gay man in a woman's body," Bush said. Not sure what she meant exactly, but let's go with it.

"There were certain things in the pilot where I was lucky I work with the two best comedy writers in the world, because I'd turn around and go, 'What is this joke?' " Bush recalled. "But we navigated it. It's certainly learning a new type of choreography, but it's all choreography.

"For me it's very exciting, because it's a little bit like science. It's something I get to dissect and look at and listen to."

It sure sounds like Bush has dissected the highs and lows of being hot.

"I think the climate is shifting in a wonderful way, but I don't think we're as far along as we should be," Bush said. "Because we're all still expected to look like Jessica Alba, and honey, she is genetically gifted.

"I am not going to go to the gym for two and a half hours a day to look like that woman. I just will admire her from afar."

Uh, me too.
