James Cameron bound for Alberta

EDMONTON — James Cameron will be Alberta-bound before the end of the month, confirmed a spokesman with the premier's office Thursday night.

A letter from the Hollywood movie director has been received stating his intentions to visit Wild Rose Country for a three-day trip beginning in Sept. 27, said Jerry Bellikka, a spokesman for Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach's office.

In the letter, Cameron, a well-known critic of the industry, says he will be touring Alberta's oilsands for the first two days of his visit and he wants to schedule a meeting with Stelmach on the final day.

"It's kind of short notice," said Bellikka.

"We certainly invited (Cameron) to come see the oilsands, and if it's possible to do it, the premier would be certainly glad to meet with him for a few minutes."

Stelmach originally urged Cameron to come for a visit, including offering "a canoe trip down the Athabasca River."

Cameron, an Ontario-born movie star who directed such hits as Aliens, Avatar, Titanic and The Terminator, has said the oilsands industry is a "black eye" to Canada's image.

He says Alberta's and Canada's governments must spend more cash on green energy sources, like wind turbines, instead of extracting oil.
