A change of heart
By LOUIS B. HOBSON

Michael Caine has just re-turned from Vancouver, where he filmed a cameo in Sylvester Stallone's new action-thriller Get Carter.

This is a remake of Caine's 1970 movie.

"I play a character called Brumby," says Caine. "He's a sleazy nightclub owner. In my version, I throw Brumby off the roof of a car park and splatter him all over the pavement.

"In Sly's version, he talks to me and convinces me to become a good man.

"They've made Sly a kinder, gentler Carter. In my version, Carter was the most vicious person in the movie, but that kind of character just won't work for Sly."

Caine is excited that The Italian Job and Zulu, two of his other early movies, are scheduled for remakes in the new year.

"I'm just hoping I get to play cameos in all the remakes. It'll keep me busy for a couple of years."

Caine stars as the kindly doctor in The Cider House Rules, scheduled for a holiday release.

There is already talk of an Oscar nomination, but Caine will have nothing to do with it.

"We actors are superstitious people. We don't want to talk of such things for fear of putting a jinx on them.

"Last year, critics were saying I was certain to get an Oscar nomination for Little Voice and that never materialized. I'd rather be wonderfully surprised than disappointed, so I'm not even giving it a second thought."
