Michael Caine is in talks to star in a remake of alien invasion classic "The War Of The Worlds," according to the movie news website Popcorn.co.uk.
Director Timothy Hines told the site he is also eyeing Matthew McConaughey and Charlize Theron for the film, which requires actors "of the highest quality to convince the viewers that this is real, that an alien invasion is actually happening."
When Orson Welles staged his radio-play version of H. G. Wells' "War Of The Worlds," his faux-documentary style was so convincing, many listeners were driven into a panic, believing Earth was actually being invaded by aliens.
The movie was also made into a 1953 film and a 1988 TV series.
To add authenticity to his adaptation, Hines is auditioning an array of international news personalities to play in the film and add a touch of contemporary authenticity, he told Popcorn.
Hines also plans to cast online movie-gossip maven Harry Knowles, purveyor of the Ain't It Cool News website, and hopes to have Knowles suffer a "gruesome death scene," Popcorn said.
