Canadian Phantom of the Opera chorus girl-turned Hollywood movie maven Neve Campbell paid a visit to Jann Arden's old digs yesterday.
Campbell is here making a thriller mini series titled Burn Up.
Yesterday the actress, best known for the Scream movies and the series Party of Five, was shooting scenes with co-stars Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and British actor Rupert Penry-Jones at the downtown apartment building Calgary-born singer Jann Arden called home during the early stages of her career.
Campbell stars as an environmental scientist working in the renewable resources wing of a large oil company (Arden's old loft doubles as Campbell's character's home).
"I think my character is very strong and it's nice to be part of a project that's meaningful," says Campbell of the script, which centres around a Global Warming conference held in Calgary.
Burn Up is a four-hour conspiracy thriller, penned by Full Monty writer Simon Beaufoy and produced in partnership between Britain's Kudos Film and Television and Calgary's very own Seven 24 Films. It's slated to premiere on Global Television and the BBC in 2008.
Campbell's character, Holly, plays opposite Penry-Jones, the head of Arrow Oil, who finds his life unravelling as he's pulled into a high-stakes struggle between environmental responsibility and big business.
Whitford plays a savvy oil industry lobbyist.
Canadian born Campbell, who now lives in London, England with her husband (British actor John Light), says this is her first time shooting in Calgary.
Kudos producer Christopher Hall says while the subject matter in Burn Up may be controversial, as the oil and gas industry is part of the city's identity, he thinks the script walks a fair line between big business and environmental responsibility.
"The oil companies here have been extremely co-operative in letting us shoot on premises and work with them," says Hall.
Filming has been taking place in and around Calgary since the end of October and will wrap up this month.
