HOLLYWOOD -- Call it divine intervention but there is no appearance by God in the new screwball comedy A Life Less Ordinary.

Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo play a pair of guardian angels and Dan Hedaya plays their immediate superior, but now there are only veiled references to the real heavenly boss.

"We wrote a brief scene in which God is playing golf. We offered the role to Sean Connery but he declined," explains director Danny Boyle.

"We needed someone who would be instantly recognizable to get the big laugh we wanted. Sean was a great fan of our Trainspotting so he considered the idea for a while.

"We were filming in Utah when Sean's people called to say he couldn't do it, so we thought of asking Michael Jordan and change it to a basketball sequence but when we tested the idea we discovered he wasn't as immediately recognizable in Europe, Britain and Asia.

"We toyed with the idea of Whoopi Goldberg for a while but eventually just scrapped the scene altogether."

A Life Less Ordinary which stars Trainspotting's Ewan McGregor as a kidnapper and Cameron Diaz as his hostage opens Oct. 24.
