Connery has an Understanding
By LOUIS B. HOBSON
HOLLYWOOD -- Sean Connery will soon find himself in the league of big-screen superheroes.

In the fantasy adventure The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which opens July 11, Connery plays the fictional British adventurer Allan Quartermain.

He joins such other Victorian literary figures as Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend), Dr. Henry Jekyll (Jason Flemyng), Mycroft Holmes (Richard Roxburg) and Tom Sawyer (Shane West) in their mission to stop a madman bent on world domination.

Connery admits he thought the whole concept of literary figures-turned-crimefighters was "a bit far out," but that didn't stop him from accepting the role.

"I got offered The Lord of the Rings and I turned it down because I didn't understand it. I was offered The Matrix twice and I turned it down because I didn't understand it," recalls Connery.

"I didn't understand The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen either, but I was damned if I was going to turn it down."

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is Connery's first film since his 1991 drama Finding Forrester.
