HOLLYWOOD -- Liev Schreiber has a dilemma.

He is the latest Scream 2 star to be romantically linked to Friends star Courteney Cox.

"I am not and have not been dating Courteney," confesses Schreiber, who plays suspected killer Cotton Weary in both Scream and Scream 2.

"I'm trying not to tell people I'm not dating Courteney because I love the idea I could be dating her.

"I saw that article in The National Enquirer that said I was Courteney Cox's hot new stud.

"It's the first time in my life I've been referred to as a hot stud and, wouldn't you know it, it's not true.

"I wonder if I can keep my stud status even if I'm not dating Courteney?"

Cox was also reported to be dating David Arquette, who plays Officer Dewey Riley in the Scream films.

Schreiber is currently starring as the mad policeman in Phantoms and opens Friday opposite Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone in Sphere.

He has begun rehearsing the New York stage version of Macbeth, in which he plays Banquo to Alec Baldwin's Macbeth.
