Cruise's company buys rights to sci-fi books
By JAM! Movies

Tom Cruise's production company has purchased the rights to "The Lost Regiment" series of war-themed sci-fi novels, Variety reports.

The eight-part time-travel novels, from author William J. Forstchen, tell the story of a civil war regiment swept into a futuristic, opressive world. The first novel in the series, "Rally Cry," was published in 1990. The most recent was 1999's "Men Of War."

Cruise's production partner, Paula Wagner, told Variety that the books constitute "a character-based action adventure about an ordinary man who ultimately struggles to save humanity."

Other titles in the series include "Down To The Sea," "A Band Of Brothers," "Men Of War," "The Union Forever", and "Never Sound Retreat."

The report said Forstchen's representatives are also negotiating to turn the stories into video games.
