Tom Cruise in overdrive
By MICHAEL RECHTSHAFFEN, QMI Agency

It's full speed ahead for Tom Cruise.

Looking to reactivate his career with the Dec. 21 release of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Cruise has been keeping busy these days, what with his big-screen singing debut in the rock musical, Rock of Ages, currently shooting and due out next summer.

Then he'll be returning to action mode with One Shot, a crime drama in the A Few Good Men mode in which he'd play an ex-military cop investigating a homicide case that's expected to start shooting this fall.

But first he needs to find his leading lady who will play the part of a no-nonsense attorney in One Shot (how come you never see any nonsense attorneys?).

A trio of actresses are said to be in the running. That would be Rosamund Pike, whom you might recognize from Barney's Version and An Education; Hayley Atwell, currently on display on Captain America; and Alexa Davalos, most recently seen in Clash of the Titans.

We're sure all three would be worthy contenders, but the long and the short of it is it'll probably come down to the successful applicant's height. According to our sources, Cruise stands no higher than 5-foot-7, so it's unlikely he'll want his leading lady to be towering over him, Nicole-style (Kidman's 5-foot-11).

The last time he was in a real big, shiny hit movie was 2006's Mission Impossible III and his female co-stars Michelle Monaghan and Keri Russell stood 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-4, respectively.

We have it on reasonably good authority that Pike is a lithe 5-foot-9, while fellow Brit Atwell stands 5-foot-6 1/2 and Davalos is 5-foot-8.

So that would leave Pike and Davalos out of the running, clearing the way for Atwell to fill those shoes.

Of course, this is all just our little theory (with "little" being the operative word).

WALK TALL

Speaking of leading men, they don't come much more compact than 5-foot-0 Danny DeVito, but the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is making sure his illustrious career won't be overlooked.

The administrators of those Walk of Fame honours have determined that Star No. 2,445 will have DeVito's name on it, with an unveiling ceremony to take place Thursday morning at 11:30 Hollywood time.

From Taxi's Louie DePalma, to Throw Momma From the Train and Romancing the Stone, to directing The War of the Roses and Hoffa, to his current stint on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 66-year-old DeVito has certainly done his bit to entertain over the years.

He'll next be heard as the voice of The Lorax in the upcoming animated movie of the same name.

As a geographical point of reference, his fellow Walk of Fame neighbours on the 6900 block of Hollywood Blvd. include the late Rex Harrison and Jean Harlow, Snow White ... and Tom Cruise.
