'Jump Street' leaping to big screen

"21 Jump Street," the TV series that launched Johnny Depp's career, will be leaping to the big screen, according to Variety.

The series, which ran from 1987-1990, followed a group of fresh-faced police officers assigned to the task of returning to high school to solve crimes and bust drug dealers infiltrating the hallways. The narcs were played by Depp, Peter DeLuise, Holly Robinson Peete, Dustin Nguyen and Richard Grieco.

Series co-creators Stephen J. Cannell and Patrick Hasburgh will be scripting the film.

Cannell's other TV credits "The A-Team," "Wiseguy," and "The Commish."
