Frumpy and lovin' it
By LOUIS B. HOBSON

HOLLYWOOD -- In the metaphysical comedy Being John Malkovich that opens Friday, Cameron Diaz plays a rather frazzled and frumpy pet store employee.

"My character takes care of animals instead of herself. She is so concerned about her little charges that she forgets she has hair and has forgotten there's such a thing as makeup," says Diaz, who was a model when she was cast as Jim Carrey's love interest in The Mask.

"I jumped at the chance to be unglamorous.

"I can tell you it took far less time to make me look unkempt than it takes to make me look like that other Cameron Diaz."
