Hooping it up with Saint Joe
By STEVE TILLEY

SCTV alumnus Joe Flaherty isn't shy about his love for Edmonton, so it's no wonder he was thrilled to be in town recently shooting an episode of the locally produced family series Mentors, playing basketball inventor Dr. James Naismith.

While Flaherty admits he sucks on the roundball court, he's no slouch on the screen - he's done roles in more than three dozen movies and TV shows, including NBC's Freaks and Geeks. While always keeping his reputation as a supremely nice guy.

We subjected Saint Joe to our gruelling 20 questions.

1. What was the last movie that you saw and loved?

American Beauty.

2. What was the first album you owned?

The Drifters - Greatest Hits.

3. What was the last book you read?

Swan's Way, by Marcel Proust.

4. What's your favourite hangout?

O'Byrne's Irish Pub. (We assume he means the one on Whyte Ave., unless there's an O'Byrne's in L.A. too.)

5. Do you have a pet peeve?

Linguini.

6. What's your idea of the perfect Sunday?

Watching an NFL double header, then the late game.

7. What's your favourite junk food?

Big Macs.

8. What was the worst job you ever had?

Latrine duty in the military.

9. What gadget or gizmo can you not live without?

Electric toothbrush.

10. Do you have a hobby or habit that you think would surprise people?

Taking unnecessary flights to get airline bonus miles.

11. What's your favourite piece of clothing?

My Gordon's Big Bald Head T-Shirt.

12. What would you change about yourself if you could?

My habit of wearing my Gordon's Big Bald Head T-shirt too much.

13. Whom do you most admire?

Ernest Hemingway.

14. What is your greatest extravagance?

Taking unnecessary airline flights.

15. Have you ever been mistaken for another celebrity?

Eugene Levy.

16. Do you have a favourite quotation?

"At my age, it is not so much a matter of abandoning my vices, but of my vices abandoning me." - La Rochefoucauld.

17. What is your greatest weakness?

My left wrist.

18. If you are reincarnated, who or what will you be?

A Celtic monk.

19. If you had to go back in time to live in another decade, which one would you choose?

Paris in the 1920s.

20. What is your favourite SCTV bit?

The CBC parody.
